2005 Critics Choice Awards

The Critics’ Choice Awards were last night. It was just the usual boring pc jokes and the winners rushing to finish their speeches. As a big award show person (and a film buff) one thing happened that was very upsetting. The show’s producers were on tight schedule and that means that the most irritating thing has to happen… Cutting off the microphone and zooming out, off the man or woman who just received an award. And this happened to none other than Ang Lee as he was accepting his award for Best Director of Brokeback Mountain. Thankfully, there were some intelligent people in the audience who booed when his mic was turned off and Ang Lee was able to finish his speech.

Now, I love award shows and I understand that you have make sure every second is scheduled. But when mics are turned off and music starts playing over the winners speech, frankly it is just rude. There is so much hype during the award season that when someone achieves great things, such as an Academy Award or a Golden Globe, they deserve an equal amount of respect. Who cares if the show goes on for four hours? I certainly don’t. And guess what, the people who do care, usually don’t watch the award show until the end; they would probably turn off their TV as soon as the host finished his intro.
