Early Oscar Picks

Is it too early to begin discussing the 2006 Academy Awards?

Well, according to GoldDerby.com (and myself), no, it is never too early.

The movie industry odds site has selected its picks for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress nominations.

And some possibilities are:

Best Picture:

MunichSteven Speilberg’s terrorist drama about the 1972 Munich Olympics and the hunt
for the Israeli athletes killers.
Brokeback MountainThe controversial and provocative film about gay cowboys directed by
Ang Lee
JarheadJake Gyllenhaal stars as a marine sniper during the 1991 Gulf War, in this Sam
Mendes (American Beauty) picture that questions the nature of war.
SyrianaThe story of the CIA’s false confidence concerning the future of the Middle East after
the end of the Cold War. George Clooney plays a CIA agent.
Memoirs of a GeishaThe movie based on the best selling novel. Directed by Rob Marshall.

Best Actress:

Charlize TheronNorth Country
Judi DenchMrs. Henderson Presents
Felicity HuffmanTransamerica
Diana KeatonThe Family Stone
Ziyi ZhangMemoirs of a Geisha

Best Actor:

Tommy Lee JonesThree Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Jake GyllenhaalJarhead
Heath LedgerBrokeback Mountain
Phillip Seymour HoffmanCapote
Joaquin PhoenixWalk the Line

These are just some the films and actors being suggested for the 2006 Oscar race.

Do not be surprised if some little film comes out of no where to win Best Picture this year. Hollywood is starting to move away from the big-budget blockbusters (i.e. Titanic) to the more artsy, controversial, and provocative movies, like Million Dollar Baby.

  1. “Munich” looks to be very interesting. It has two things going for it: Speilberg directing and a powerful story.
Plus, it is already creating some controversy, about the film’s political views.

    It is opening December 23.
