Preview: Defiance

Defiance is the story of an enclave of Jewish partisan fighters in World War II. Directed by Edward Zwick, the film stars Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jaime Bell and George MacKay as four Jewish brothers who escape Nazi-occupied Belarus, join Soviet partisans and save approixmately 1200 Jews still in the ghettos.

The film is based on the story of the Bielski Partisans and the 1993 nonfiction book, Defiance: The Bielski Partisans, written by Nechama Tec. As expected with any film that claims to be, in some part, based on history, there are already ample criticisms of Defiance for its apparent disregard of historical accuracy (see this article for example).

In today’s New York Times, Edward Zwick has written an article about the making of Defiance and why he chose to make the film. It’s an interesting read and if you are interested in seeing Defiance it is worth checking out.

Defiance opens in theaters this Wednesday.
