Here is my Oscar blurb from this week’s Mount Holyoke News:
The 81st Annual Academy Awards air this Sunday at 8:30 p.m. on ABC and this year, they have a completely different vibe. Not only do we not know who will win, but the Academy is mum on the big name presenters. Sure this means that Sean Penn doesn’t have to suffer through an awkward interview with Lisa Rinna and some former Backstreet Boy, but cutting back on special time with Ryan Seacrest and the Big Vowel (a.k.a. the E! Network) takes away the pleasure of Oscar night.
Wolverine, I mean, Hugh Jackman is playing host this year. The question is does he hold a candle to the likes of past emcees Billy Crystal or Jon Stewart? Well, he’s not People‘s Sexiest Man Alive for nothing. Then there are this year’s musical performances for Best Song. Get ready America. Bollywood is coming to a television near you and you’ll want to turn up the volume when the recently popped M.I.A. performs her nominated song, “O Saya.”
And let’s not forget the most important part of the Oscar telecast. Just how many times will the camera pan to Jack Nicholson?
