2010 Golden Globe Nominees

As of 8:45 AM, here are the 2010  Golden Globe nominees. I have to jet off to class in Amherst, but I will post the entire list and my thoughts when I get back.

Update: List of nominees is now complete, along with my thoughts.

BEST PICTURE: DRAMA

Avatar
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Precious
Up in the Air

I’m saddened that Jane Campion’s brilliant Bright Star is not nominated here.

BEST PICTURE: COMEDY OR MUSICAL

500 Days of Summer
The Hangover
It’s Complicated
Julie & Julia
Nine

The big omission is the Coen brothers A Serious Man.

BEST DIRECTOR

Katheryn Bigelow, “The Hurt Locker”
James Cameron, “Avatar”
Clint Eastwood, “Invictus”
Jason Reitman, “Up in the AIr”
Quentin Tarantino, “Inglourious Basterds”

The HFPA certainly loves Clint Eastwood. He was nominated over Lee Daniels and that is by far the biggest omission. Question: Have two formerly married directors ever competed against each other? Note to self: Look this up.

BEST ACTOR: DRAMA

Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
George Clooney, Up in the Air
Colin Firth, A Single Man
Morgan Freeman, Invictus
Tobey Maguire, Brothers

BEST ACTRESS: DRAMA

Emily Blunt, The Young Victoria
Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
Helen Mirren, The Last Station
Carey Mulligan, An Education
Gabourey Sidibe, Precious

Again, no nomination for Abbie Cornish in Bright Star. But isn’t it fantastic that Gabourey Sidibe is nominated for Precious? Unlike Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), she wasn’t overrun by big names. Then again, it is always easier for unknown (or lesser known) actresses to be nominated than actors.

BEST ACTRESS: COMEDY OR MUSICAL

Sandra Bullock, The Proposal
Marion Cotillard, Nine
Julia Roberts, Duplicity
Meryl Streep, It’s Complicated
Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia

Streep nominated twice! Woohoo! I think she wins for Julie & Julia and that is the film for which she will be nominated for the Oscar.

BEST ACTOR: COMEDY OR MUSICAL

Matt Damon, The Informant!
Daniel Day-Lewis, Nine
Robert Downey, Jr., Sherlock Holmes
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 500 Days of Summer
Michael Stuhlbarg, A Serious Man

Some people expected Bradley Cooper to be nominated for The Hangover. But I prefer the nominations of Downey and Gordon-Levitt is lieu of him. Besides, I really consider The Hangover to be an ensemble comedy, like The Ladykillers but in Las Vegas and with Mike Tyson… and everyone’s hungover.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Penelope Cruz, “Nine”
Vera Farmiga, “Up in the Air”
Anne Kendrick, “Up in the Air”
MoNique, “Precious”
Julianne Moore, “A Single Man”

This is MoNique’s category to win. No doubt about that.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Matt Damon, “Invictus”
Woody Harrelson, “The Messenger”
Christopher Plummer, “The Last Station”
Stanley Tucci, “The Lovely Bones”
Christoph Waltz, “Inglourious Basterds”

Love the nomination of Stanley Tucci. He is the main reason I am excited to see The Lovely Bones (and he was also a delightful presence in Julie & Julia).

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

A Prophet
Baaria
Broken Embraces
The Maid
The White Ribbon

Love Un Prophete, love Broken Embraces, love The White Ribbon. My favorite category by far.

BEST SCREENPLAY

District 9
The Hurt Locker
It’s Complicated
Inglourious Basterds
Up in the Air

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

Up
The Informant!
Avatar
A Single Man
Where the Wild Things Are

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”
“Coraline”
“Fantastic Mr. Fox”
“The Princess and the Frog”
“Up”

Probably my second favorite category.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

“Cinema Italiano,” Nine
“I Want to Come Home,” Everybody’s Fine
“I Will See You,” Avatar
“The Weary Kind,” Crazy Heart
“Winter,” Brothers

The big performers always win this category. Why else did Bruce Springsteen beat out Clint Eastwood last year?
