Once again the Best Song category has proven to be the biggest headache for the Academy Awards producers.
It was announced today that the Academy Award telecast on March 7 will not feature performances by the Best Song nominees: “The Weary Kind” from Crazy Heart, “Take It All” from Nine, “Loin de Paname” from Paris 36, and two tunes from The Princess and the Frog . While I’m in favor of anything that avoids another horrendous mash-up like last year’s Slumdog Millionaire-Wall-E performance, this does seem like a losing situation. Yes, the Best Song performances rarely go over well, but when they do, like Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova performing “Falling Slowly” from Once, this category is always a nice treat.
I just wonder what producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic plan on replacing these five performances with. There are 10 Best Picture nominees which means more emphasis has to be placed on those five extra films. But after that? There are only so many montages we can be subjected to.
Are you going to miss the Best Song performances this year?
