Birthday Blitz Blogathon: The Movies Are

Last week, I asked for suggestions for 24 movies I had not yet seen but should really watch. The plan is for me to watch these movies and write about them in the 24 days leading up to my birthday. I received a ton of suggestions. Here are the movies.

1. Jackie Brown (dir. Quentin Tarantino, 1997) – Recommended by my friend Bobby because his favorite band (one of them) is The Meters and they are featured on the soundtrack.

2. Battle Cry (dir. Raoul Walsh, 1955) – Recommended by my dad because this is the only way he could get me to watch anything connected to Leon Uris.

3. Yanks (dir. John Schlesinger, 1979) – Recommended by my mom because she loves Richard Gere.

4. The Dark Side of the Heart (dir.  Eliseo Subiela, 1993) – Recommended by Clau

5. Spies (dir. Fritz Lang, 1928) – Recommended by Trevor

6. The Dreamers (dir. Bernard Bertolucci, 2003) – Recommended by Lauren.

7. Paris, Texas (dir. Wim Wenders, 1984) – Recommended by Julian.

8. The Devil’s Backbone (dir. Guillermo del Toro, 2001) – Recommended by Clau.

9. The Cuckoo (dir. Aleksandr Rogozhkin, 2002) – Recommended by Not Gross.

10. The Commitments (dir. Alan Parker, 1991) – recommended by Jake.

11. Whirlpool (dir. Otto Preminger, 1949) – Recommended by a friend.

12. Bad Lieutenant: Port Call of New Orleans (dir. Werner Herzog, 2009)- Technically not recommended by anyone but I am sick of being left out of important critical discussions of this movie at the office I intern at.

13. Magnolia (dir. Paul Thomas Anderson, 1999) – Recommended by Yiannis.

14. The King of Comedy (dir Martin Scorsese, 1982) Recommended by Yiannis.

15. Barton Fink (dir. Joel and Ethan Coen, 1991) – Recommended by Film Cave.

16. Murder by Death (dir. Robert Moore, 1976) – Recommended by Stephanie

17. Gettysburg (dir. Ronald F. Maxwell, 1993) – Recommended by Mallory

18. Legend (dir. Ridley Scott, 1985) – Recommended by Kim

19. The Lookout (dir. Scott Frank, 2007) – Recommended by Anna

20. The Fisher King (dir. Terry Gilliam, 1991) – Recommended by Andrew, seconded by Candice.

21. A Face in the Crowd (dir Elia Kazan, 1957)- Recommended by Jake

22. Ninja Assassin (dir. James McTeigue, 2009) – Recommended by Chrissy, seconded by Alex

23. Ichi the Killer (dir. Takashi Miike, 2001) – Recommended by Mark

24. Sweetie (dir. Jane Campion, 1989) – A last minute addition to replace Carry on Spying.

I plan on starting the blogathon August 22, 24 days before my birthday on September 14. Until then, I am excited to watch these movies without really having a clue what most of them are about.

  1. What an interesting list! I haven’t seen most of them either, but I can add a ringing endorsement for Jackie Brown and A Face in the Crowd. I look forward to reading what you think of all of these.

  2. That is a very eclectic list! The only ones I’ve seen are Magnolia and The Fisher King. Magnolia is definitely one of my favorites! This is a cool project – I love how you create structure for yourself :)
