Snap Judgments: 69th Annual Golden Globes Nominations

The Ides of March received four nominations. Unsurprising; it is perfect Globes bait.

The Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning. My snap judgments for some of the categories are below.

Best Motion Picture – Drama
The Descendants
The Help
The Ides of March
Moneyball
War Horse

The Ides of March (finally?) gets some attention. (I forgot I saw this movie.) Ides was nominated in place of The Tree of Life and Melancholia. But the fact that Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was not nominated restores what little faith I had in the HFPA.

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
50/50
The Artist
Bridesmaids
Midnight In Paris
My Week With Marilyn

Safe and expected nominees.

Best Actor – Drama
George Clooney – The Descendants
Michael Fassbender – Shame
Leonardo DiCaprio – J. Edgar
Ryan Gosling – The Ides of March
Brad Pitt – Moneyball

The Gosling slipped in here instead of Gary Oldman or Michael Shannon. After a snub from SAG, I hope Oldman’s Oscars chances aren’t completely gone.

Best Actress – Drama
Glenn Close, – Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis – The Help
Rooney Mara – The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Meryl Streep – The Iron Lady
Tilda Swinton – We Need To Talk About Kevin

It’s official. No one cares about Elizabeth Olsen and Martha Marcy May Marlene. But hey, Rooney Mara!

Best Actor – Musical or Comedy
Jean DuJardin – The Artist
Brendan Gleeson – The Gaurd
Joseph Gordon-Levitt – 50/50
Ryan Gosling – Crazy, Stupid, Love
Owen Wilson – Midnight In Paris

That’s two nominations for the Gosling. 2011 was the year of Ryan Gosling (and Ryan Gosling internet memes) so of course the HFPA would embrace that.

Best Actress – Musical or Comedy
Jodie Foster – Carnage
Kate Winslet – Carnage
Charlize Theron – Young Adult
Kristen Wiig – Bridesmaids
Michelle Williams – My Week With Marilyn

Predictable nominees again.

Best Supporting Actor
Kenneth Branagh – My Week With Marilyn
Albert Brooks – Drive
Jonah Hill – Moneyball
Viggo Mortensen – A Dangerous Method
Christopher Plummer – Beginners

After being snubbed by SAG, Albert Brooks returns. This proves my theory that actors are dumb and didn’t understand Drive. And can someone please explain to me Jonah Hill’s nomination?

Best Supporting Actress
Bérénice Bejo – The Artist
Jessica Chastain – The Help
Octavia Spencer – The Help
Shailene Woodley – The Descendants
Janet McTeer – Albert Nobbs

Maybe Melissa McCarthy won’t get that Oscar nomination after all. And I just have to accept that Jessica Chastain will be nominated for The Help.

Best Director
Woody Allen – Midnight In Paris
George Clooney – The Ides of March
Michel Hazanavicius – The Artist
Alexander Payne – The Descendants
Martin Scorsese – Hugo

I’m really not okay with the nominations for The Ides of March.

Best Screenplay
Midnight In Paris
The Ides of March
The Artist
The Descendants
Moneyball

Best Original Song – Motion Picture
“Hello Hello” – Gnomeo and Juliet
“The Keeper” – Machine Gun Preacher
“Lay Your Head Down” – Albert Nobbs
“The Living Proof” – The Help
“Masterpiece” – W.E.

There was an original song in The Help?

Best Original Score – Motion Picture
The Artist
W.E.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Hugo
War Horse

This Madonna movie perplexes me. Why is she still allowed to make movies?

Best Foreign Language Film
The Flowers of War (China)
In The Land of Blood and Honey (USA)
The Kid With The Bike (Belgium)
A Separation (Iran)
The Skin I Live In (Spain)

Wow, HFPA, you’re not even hiding the fact that you want Angelina Jolie to show up to the Golden Globes.

Best Animated Feature Film
The Adventures of Tin Tin
Arthur Christmas
Cars 2
Puss In Boots
Rango
