Busey in a Bubble: The Best Commentary on the Irrelevant?

The final image of the MTV Movie Awards was probably the best unintentional commentary on the annual awards show possible.

The charismatic crazy charmer Gary Busey was in a bubble inches away from the cast of the Twilight movies as they accepted the award for Best Movie. Does he know where he is? What is he grasping at? Is he reaching out to touch Taylor Lautner? One can only dream.

For a show as ridiculously irrelevant as the Twilight MTV Movie Awards, I couldn’t ask for a better end note. Since we have to deal with Twilight at least until 2013, Busey and his bubble should be on call to remind us that this awards show is just mindless fodder to start the equally mindless summer movie season.

Les Grossman Steals the Show

Since 2005, Tom Cruise has desperately needed to redeem his public image and he might have just done so at this year’s MTV Movie Awards. Decked out as Les Grossman, the grossly hairy and foul-mouthed movie executive from Tropic Thunder, Cruise has been making appearances in promos and the opening sequence. And then Grossman danced with J.Lo to her song “Get Right”. It was epic.

From Ed Helms dressed as Lady Gaga to Ken Jeong’s leopard print leotard (if you can even call it), this segment stole the show. Grossman has officially become a larger-than-the-movie character who will no doubt make another appearance before the joke runs its course. Especially since it has given Cruise’s career a jolt. Except for Sandra Bullock receiving the Generation Award, this was the best moment of a show overrun by the F-bomb and Twihards.

2010 MTV Movie Award Nominations Announced

The MTV Movie Award nominations, which should perhaps be better known as the Most Popular Movie Awards, were announced today. The Hangover, Avatar, and Twilight: New Moon are the most nominated movies. Sandra Bullock received three nominations for Best Actress, Best Comedic Performance, and Best Kiss (with Ryan Reynolds).

You can vote for your favorites over at MTV.com.

As expected K-Stew and R-Pattz are nominated for Best Kiss. Maybe they will actually go through with it this year.

I am also a fan of this new category: Best Scared-As-S**t Performance. The nominees are Alison Lohman in Drag Me to Hell, Amanda Seyfried in Jennifer’s Body, Jesse Eisenberg in Zombieland, Katie Featherston in Paranormal Activity, and Sharlto Copley in District 9.

Golden Girl Betty White is also nominated for the Best WTF Moment. Lets hope she beats out Bill Murray, Ken Jeong and Megan Fox.

The Edward vs. Jacob battle might finally be settled at the June 6 ceremony hosted by Aziz Ansari. Both Pattinson and Lautner are nominated for Best Actor.

2007 MTV Movie Awards Nominees

Second to the Oscars, the MTV Movie Awards are one of the more enjoyable, almost completely pointless, fun award shows. Let’s be honest. I am 18 so I can’t pretend to be all that sophisticated when I’m not. I freakin LOVE the MTV Movie Awards.

This year’s show is being broadcast live on June 3 for the first time and the host is pottymouthed comedienne Sarah Silverman. I tuning in just to see how far she’s going to push the limits.

2006 MTV Movie Awards

Forget the Oscars. Forget the Golden Globes. The most important award show in Hollywood is none other than the MTV Movie Awards.

The nominees for the annual award show were announced today, with fan favorites Wedding Crashers and The 40-year-old Virgin leading the pack with 5 nominations each.

Big budget blockbusters Batman Begins, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Hustle & Flow, Sin City, and Star Wars: The Revenge of the Sith each earned 3 nominations.

What I love about the MTV Movie Awards, is not so much the quality of the nominees, but more the free-spirited feeling of the award show. Honestly, when else could Paris Hilton, Brokeback Mountain, and Saw II be nominated for anything at the same award show? Only on MTV.
