My SAG Award Predictions

Tonight’s SAG Awards should be very routine. The expected winners will win and if any surprises occur, there will be very few. (Because in Cinefille’s world, where she controls all award shows, Abigail Breslin would beat out Jennifer Hudson.) Here are my predictions of who the most likely winners will be.

———————

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Leonardo DiCaprio – Blood Diamond
Ryan Gosling – Half Nelson
Peter O’Toole – Venus
Will Smith – The Pursuit of Happyness
Forest Whitaker – The Last King of Scotland

Who Should Win: Unfortunately, I have only seen The Last King of Scotland, so my opinion doesn’t have the foundation I would like to.
Who Will Win: Forest Whitaker, but Peter O’Toole does have one thing working in his favor. He’s a legend.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Penelope Cruz – Volver
Judi Dench – Notes on a Scandal
Helen Mirren – The Queen
Meryl Streep – The Devil Wears Prada
Kate Winslet – Little Children

Who Should Win: I have now seen The Queen twice and Helen Mirren was amazing both times.
Who Will Win: Helen Mirren. It will be one of the biggest shocks of the year if Helen Mirren doesn’t win.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Alan Arkin – Little Miss Sunshine
Leonardo DiCaprio – The Departed
Jackie Earle Haley – Little Children
Djimon Hounsou – Blood Diamond
Eddie Murphy – Dreamgirls

Who Should Win: I would love it if Alan Arkin or Jackie Earle Haley won but…
Who Will Win: Eddie Murphy’s performance in Dreamgirls is one the best things about the movie.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Adriana Barraza – Babel
Cate Blanchett – Notes on a Scandal
Abigail Breslin – Little Miss Sunshine
Jennifer Hudson – Dreamgirls
Rinko Kikuchi – Babel

Who Should Win: Adriana Barraza, Cate Blanchett, Rinko Kikuchi and especially Abigail Breslin deliver great performances however…
Who Will Win: Jennifer Hudson’s name is probably being engraved in the statue as I’m writing this.

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
Babel
Bobby
The Departed
Dreamgirls
Little Miss Sunshine

Who Will Win: The main reason why I believe Alan Arkin and Abigail Breslin will not win in their respective categories is because …
Who Should Win: Little Miss Sunshine is going to walk away with the Best Ensemble SAG. Little Miss Sunshine is a delightful movie and every actor’s dream. Babel could also win, but LMS is more likely.

——————–
There you have it, folks.
To wrap up my predictions are: Best Actor, Forest Whittaker; Best Actress, Helen Mirren; Best Supporting Actor, Eddie Murphy; Best Supporting Actress, Jennifer Hudson and Best Ensemble, Little Miss Sunshine.

Who knows, maybe there will be some surprises.

The 13th annual SAG Awards air tonight at 8pm on TBS and TNT. Julie Andrews is set to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Here is the complete list of nominees.

The SAG Awards, I feel, are more representative of the Academy Awards than the Golden Globes Awards. Mostly because the major awards are not split between the genres. The actors nominated for SAG Awards will most likely be nominated an Oscar.

It’s interesting that big names such as Beyonce (Dreamgirls), Brad Pitt (Babel) and Jack Nicholson (The Departed) were passed over for nominations. I don’t expect Beyonce or Brad Pitt to be nominated for Oscars, but I definitely think Nicholson will be.

Aside from Nicholson not being nominated, I really have no problems with any of the SAG nominations. There seem to be no other major snubs and no major surprises either.

But maybe you see things a bit differently. So feel free to let me know.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Julie Andrews

Julie Andrews will receive the SAG Life Achievement Award.

When I was younger, I always wanted to have Mary Poppins fly into my home and become my nanny. So this makes me incredibly happy.

I LOVE Julie Andrews. She is one of the rare movie actresses who managed to keep working despite the limits Hollywood sets for female actresses. (She deserves a lifetime achievement award just for that.)

Andrews was the first choice to play Eliza Doolite in My Fair Lady ( she had originated the role on Broadway but the part eventually went to Audrey Hepburn). Reportedly, Jack L. Warner didn’t believe she would be photogenic enough.

Did any of that matter? No. That same year (1964) , Julie Andrews starred in two feature films. Mary Poppins and The Americanization of Emily, winning the Academy Award for Mary Poppins.

Julie Andrews’ film career can be summed up with one iconic cinematic moment.

My SAG Award Predictions

The SAG Awards are today at 8 pm est., airing on TBS and TNT. I’m very excited for this award show because the theme is CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD. For starters, Shirley Temple Black is receiving the lifetime achievement award and there is going to be a BIG surprise. (I hope it’s Paul Newman.)

Male Actor in a Leading Role
Russell Crowe, Cinderella Man
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote
Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain
Joaquin Phoenix, Walk The Line
David Strathairn, Good Night, and Good Luck

Who Should Win: Phillip Seymour Hoffman Although I still have not seen Capote, I am convinced that he should win.

Who Will Win: Phillip Seymour Hoffman. His 15 wins in the critics’ circles compared to Heath Ledger’s lowly five practically guarantees him another win tonight. He’s been around longer than Ledger and is more respected. But actors are weird, so a surprise is likely.

Female Actor in a Leading Role
Judi Dench, Mrs. Henderson Presents
Felicity Huffman, Transamerica
Charlize Theron, North Country
Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
Zhang Ziyi, Memoirs of a Geisha

Who Should Win: Felicity Huffman. She should for taking on a challengeing role and being a consistent and excellent actress. But I’m expecting her to win for Desperate Housewives. If she doesn’t, then she will probably win in this category.

Who Will Win: Reese Witherspoon She was the heart and soul of Walk the Line. Honestly, I’m not sure who the winner will be but whoever wins will be the frontrunner for the Academy Award.

Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Don Cheadle, Crash
George Clooney, Syriana
Matt Dillon, Crash
Paul Giamatti, Cinderella Man
Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain

Who Should Win: Paul Giamatti. Just because I love him and he always delivers a top notch performance. And actors love him.

Who Will Win: George Clooney. Again, actors love him and by giving him the SAG Award, guild members will also feel like they are honoring Good Night, and Good Luck.

Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams,
Junebug
Catherine Keener, Capote
Frances McDormand, North Country
Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener
Michelle Williams,
Brokeback Mountain

Who Should Win: Amy Adams. although I LOVED Rachel Weisz in The Constant Gardener, after I saw Junebug the other day I became convinced that she is the rightful winner.

Who Will Win: This one was a tough one but I’m guessing Rachel Weisz but Michelle Williams could easilyw in this category.

Cast
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
Crash
Good Night, and Good Luck
Hustle & Flow

Who Should Win: Crash. Easily the best ensemble in years.

Who Will Win: Crash. By awarding Crash with the Best Cast award, all the actors (including nominees Matt Dillon and Don Cheadle) will be rewarded for their risky and amazing work.
